THE EGYPTIAN PHARAOH HOUND
Pharaoh Hounds are one of the oldest domesticated dogs in recorded history and thier lineage can be traced back 5000 years. They have graced the sands of time since the days of the Sphinx and the Pyramids. Young King Tut found pleasure running and hunting with his hounds and a striking likeness of the Pharaoh Hound can be found at the entrance of his tomb.
Before the time of Christ, Phoenician traders were thought to have taken these hounds to the Island of Malta, where known as the Kelb Tal-Fenek they have been carefully preserved for several thousand years. In Malta they are bred for rabbit hunting and are greatly cherished by the Maltese people.
In 1963, much to the reluctance of the Maltese, the first Pharaoh Hounds were exported to England. Several litters were bred there and from these litters dogs were exported to the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
In 1970 the first litter was born in the US, and in January of 1984 the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club.
Pharaoh Hound temperment is summed up in the AKC standard as follows-"Intelligent, friendly, affectionate and playful. Alert and active, very fast with a marked keenness for hunting, both by sight and scent."

I got my first Pharaoh Hound in 1986, his name was Tanis. He was a great intoduction to the breed, as I did Conformation, Lure Coursing, Open Field Coursing and some Obedience with him. Krista was my second , not long after Tanis. She was a lure operater's nightmare. Tehen was my first Special, winning my first Group Placement. Harry, however was my star, my 'heart dog', he did everything I asked of him and more. DeeDee has been a great Special, winning multiple AKC Group Placements, and Multi-Best In Multi Breed Shows in UKC all owner/handled. Gozo, my import from Malta, is a joy~ I can not wait to get him in the ring. He has already won Best Puppy In Multi Breed Show, and Multi Reserve Best Puppy In Show UKC.
